Gangs Of Wasseypur is one of the films which changed Indian cinema and became a cult classic. Directed by Anurag Kashyap and released in 2012, the film featured some of the finest actors of Hindi cinema, best dialogues and fresh soundtrack by Sneha Khanwalkar. The two part film series tells the story spanning five decades from 1940s-1990s and three generations of a family.
Gangs Of Wasseypur - concept and story.
Based on real life events, the film started with Zeishan Quadri bringing this real life story to Anurag Kashyap who then sent out his crew to do more research on the subject and bring as much material as they could. While Zeishan Quadri brough the original story, Anurag Kashyap wrote the film.
Gangs Of Wasseypur - Casting.
Anurag told in an interview that he knew he wanted Manoj Bajpai to play Sardar Khan and while the two were not in much touch, Anurag called Manoj, the duo had a meeting and the actor was hooked on the film with only one codition - to change the name of his character from it's original name to 'Sardar Khan'.
Manoj Bajpai also recommended many actors for the films. It was Huma Qureshi's first film. For Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the director revealed that he always felt something special about the actor and camera loves him. Richa Chadha was first offered the role of Durga but as Kashyap couldn't find anyone to play Nagma, he offered the role to Richa and she owned it.
For the character of Sultan, it was Mukesh Chabra who recommended Pankaj Tripathi - who was busy doing TV shows but upon receiving the film offer from Anurag Kashyap he gave priority to film over his running TV show. Kashyap needed Piyush Mishra to be the voice of the film and play Nasir, even though he also offered him the role of Ramadhir Singh first.
For the role of Ramadhir Singh, Anurag Kashyap knew Tighmanshu Dhulia could play it well as he figured that Dhulia is as good of an actor as he the director during the movie Shagird.
Fun Facts about Gangs Of Wasseypur.
- Huma Qureshi was the only actress in the film who wasn't given any script as her role wasn't in the script first.
- Nawazzuding Siddiqui had to watch various videos for the preparation of his scenes including killing and violence, and the whole 'Permission scene with Huma Qureshi' has happened to him in the real life with his past girlfriend as well.
- Pankaj Tripathi had to shoot in the real butcher shop even though he is pure vegetarian.
- For the character of Perpendicular, Aaditya Kumar practiced playing with blade in his mouth for over six months.
- Actor Vicky Kaushal's father Shyam Kaushal worked as the action director in the film with Vicky being one of his assistant as well.
- After writing the script of Gangs Of Wasseypur, Anurag Kashyap lost it at the airport and stayed there for two days until they found his lost bag with script.
